India ODI most fours: All-Time Records

Sachin Tendulkar hit 2,016 fours in one-day internationals for India. No other Indian has reached 1,400, and only four others have passed a thousand. Virat Kohli is second on 1,298, Virender Sehwag third on 1,132 and Sourav Ganguly fourth on 1,122.
Eight thousand and sixty-four of Tendulkar's 18,426 ODI runs came in fours — 43.8% of everything he scored, before a single six is counted. Add the 195 sixes and half his career runs arrived in two shot types.
The count is the obvious ranking and it is mostly a proxy for how many balls a batter faced. The column that separates these careers is the second one: what proportion of a player's runs came in boundaries at all. On that measure Sehwag and Rahul Dravid are 29 percentage points apart, and they scored their runs in the same decade for the same team.

This table stops at seven rather than running to twenty-five. Career four counts for India's batters below Shikhar Dhawan could not be verified to a standard that justified printing them, and a boundary list built on approximations is worse than a short one. What is here has been checked against each player's runs and balls faced.
Sehwag hit a boundary every 6.8 balls
Virender Sehwag faced 7,655 deliveries for India in one-day cricket and hit 1,132 fours from them, one every 6.8 balls. That is five balls faster than Rahul Dravid, four faster than Sourav Ganguly, and nearly six faster than Virat Kohli.
Two-thirds of Sehwag's ODI runs — 66.5% — came in fours or sixes. He scored 2,676 of his 7,995 runs in ones, twos and threes, across 235 innings. There is no other India career of comparable length with that distribution, and it explains both the average of 35.37 and the strike rate of 104.44 that sat beside it.
Dravid is the counterweight at 37.6%. He took 6,712 of his 10,768 runs in singles and twos, which is more running between the wickets than any other batter on this page did, and he hit 42 sixes in 314 innings. The two methods produced 7,995 and 10,768 runs respectively, which is the point: neither was wrong.
Tendulkar's 2,016 and what it took
Twenty-one thousand three hundred and sixty-eight deliveries produced 2,016 fours, one every 10.6 balls. Both halves of that are records for India — no other Indian has faced 16,000 balls in the format — and the four count is a direct consequence of the ball count.
The useful comparison is Kohli, second on the list with 1,298 from 15,903 balls, one every 12.3. Sachin Tendulkar hit fours at a faster rate than Kohli across a career two-fifths longer, while Kohli's overall strike rate is the higher of the two. Kohli made up the difference in running: 8,571 of his 14,941 runs came in ones, twos and threes, against Tendulkar's 9,186 from a far bigger total.
That difference in method is why a boundary count and a runs count rank the same players differently, and why this page sits beside rather than inside India's most ODI runs.
Fours against sixes
Rohit Sharma has 1,006 fours and 369 sixes. His boundary share of 52.4% is second only to Sehwag's and Dhawan's on this page, but only 33.8% of his runs came in fours — the lowest proportion here. He is the one batter whose six count does the heavy lifting, and the full picture is on India's most ODI sixes.
Ganguly and Tendulkar arrive at an identical boundary share of 50.1% by different routes: Ganguly with 1,122 fours and 189 sixes from 297 innings, Tendulkar with almost twice the fours and roughly the same sixes from 452. Ganguly's six count against his four count is the highest ratio of the pre-2005 names.
Shikhar Dhawan is the most boundary-dependent batter on the list after Sehwag, at 56.5% from 164 innings. He opened alongside Rohit through most of the 2013-to-2019 period and made 17 hundreds in that role, at a rate of one four every 8.8 balls.

Shikhar Dhawan hit more fours per innings than anyone else here, 5.13, from the fewest innings on the page. Sehwag is second at 4.82 despite hitting one every 6.8 balls, which is faster than Dhawan's 8.8 — the difference is that Dhawan's innings lasted longer on average, so he faced more deliveries per appearance.
That is the trap in a per-innings column. It mixes two things a per-ball column separates: how often a batter hit a boundary, and how long he stayed to do it. Both are printed here because a reader looking for the harder hitter wants the balls-per-four figure and a reader looking for the more productive innings wants this one.
Rahul Dravid is last on both measures and third on the aggregate count, which is entirely a function of his 314 innings — the most of anyone in this group. Longevity puts a batter high on a count list regardless of method, which is the same effect that puts Tendulkar first.
The same batters over the same years
The career table above spans 1989 to 2026, which means it sets Tendulkar's first decade against Kohli's last one and calls the difference a difference in method. The Cricsheet ball-by-ball archive allows a cleaner comparison: it covers every India ODI from mid-2002 onward, so inside that window the batters faced broadly the same regulations, the same fielding restrictions and, for long stretches, the same bowling attacks.
Restricted to that window, and to batters who faced at least 2,000 deliveries for India, the boundary rates order themselves like this.

Two things change when the era is held fixed. The first is that Tendulkar's post-2002 rate, a four every 9.6 balls, is markedly faster than his career figure of 10.6. The half of his career the archive covers is the later half, and he found the rope more often in it than in the first, which cuts against the usual telling of a batter slowing as he aged.
The second is that Shubman Gill arrives at 8.8 balls per four, level with Dhawan and inside the top three. He has not faced enough deliveries to appear on the career count table and will not for several years, but on rate he is already batting the way India's most boundary-dependent openers did.
Gautam Gambhir is the most instructive entry. He hit a four every 11.0 balls and drew 42.3% of his runs from them, yet his boundary share is only 44.4%, a gap of two percentage points, because he hit 17 sixes in 5,804 deliveries. Nobody else on this page has a narrower gap between those two columns, and it identifies a batter who scored quickly without ever leaving the ground.
Where in the innings the fours came
Every delivery India has faced in the archive carries its over number, which turns the boundary question into a positional one. Sorted by phase across four eras, the pattern is consistent in shape and not at all consistent in direction.

The first ten overs have grown steadily more productive in fours: one every 9.6 balls in the early 2000s, one every 8.0 in the current decade. That is what two new balls, a hard ball for longer and a top order picked to attack the powerplay produce.
The last ten have moved the other way, from a four every 10.7 balls to one every 11.3. India are not hitting fewer boundaries at the death, they are hitting a different one. Across the same four eras India's balls per six in overs 41 to 50 fell from 37.6 to 19.2, so the shot that once cleared the infield for four now clears the rope. Those overs still yield more than seven an over; the four has simply stopped being how they are scored, which is the trend traced on the India ODI sixes record.
The middle overs barely move. Between 13.0 and 14.5 balls per four across twenty-four years, they are the most stable phase in India's innings, and they remain the phase where a batter is likelier to be running than hitting.
Position, not personality
Sorting India's post-2002 batting by the position the batter came in at produces the cleanest gradient on this page.

An India opener takes 44 to 47% of his runs in fours. A number eight takes 29%. The slide is close to monotonic and it holds across every batter India has picked in the format for twenty-four years, which means the boundary-share column in the career table is measuring the batting position at least as much as it is measuring the batter.
That is the honest reading of Sehwag at 66.5% and Dravid at 37.6%. Sehwag opened; Dravid mostly did not. Put the two men in the same slot and the 29-point gap would narrow a long way — not to nothing, because Sehwag really did hit harder than anyone India has had at the top, but to something considerably less dramatic than the career table implies.
The one position that breaks the gradient is the second opener's slot at 9.2 balls per four, faster than the first opener's 10.2. The batter who faces the second over rather than the first meets a marginally older ball and a field already committed, and India have generally used that slot for the more aggressive of the two.

Four of those seven innings are double hundreds, and every India innings the archive holds that produced 24 or more fours is one. But the reverse does not hold, and that is the more interesting half. India have made seven ODI double hundreds in the archived period, and three of them are not on this table at all: Rohit Sharma's 209 against Australia in 2013 contained 12 fours and 16 sixes, his 208 against Sri Lanka in 2017 had 13 and 12, and Shubman Gill's 208 against New Zealand had 19 and 9.
So a double hundred can be built two ways. Rohit's 264 took 33 fours; his 209 took 12 and cleared the rope sixteen times for a score only 55 runs lower. The 264 remains the most fours hit in any one-day international innings by anyone, and 132 of its runs came in fours alone.
Kohli's 183 at Mirpur is the entry that fits no pattern here. Twenty-two fours and two sixes, in a chase of 330 against Pakistan finished with thirteen balls to spare, is a boundary count normally attached to a double hundred. It was produced instead by a batter who barely left the ground and hit the gaps for four hours.
Home and away
India have played 191 of their archived ODIs at Indian grounds and 335 away or at neutral venues, and the batting splits along that line more sharply than most readers would guess.

An India batter hits a four every 10.7 balls at home and every 12.6 away, nearly two full deliveries slower. The six gap is wider still in proportional terms. Half a run an over separates the two, and almost all of that difference is boundary scoring rather than running.
Some of it is the ground: Indian outfields are generally quicker and the square boundaries shorter than those in England, New Zealand and South Africa, where a good deal of India's away cricket is played. Some of it is the bowling. The point for this page is that a career boundary share is partly an accident of where a batter's team happened to tour, and a top-order batter of the 2000s who spent three winters in England and South Africa would sit lower in that column for reasons owing nothing to his method.
What the boundary share is actually measuring
A high boundary percentage is not a compliment or a criticism on its own. It describes where in the innings a batter operated and how the side wanted him to operate — an opener facing a hard ball with two fielders out has more four-hitting opportunity per ball than a number four rebuilding at 60 for 3.
It is also era-sensitive. Fielding restrictions in the first ten overs, and later the powerplay rules, made the top of the order the place where boundaries were cheapest to find. Every batter on this page above 49% boundary share opened for India; every batter below 42% batted at three or four.

Sources and method
Career four counts were taken from published ODI most-fours records and confirmed per player against that player's career line. Runs, innings, balls faced and six counts come from ESPNcricinfo's Statsguru career query for men's ODIs with the team filter set to India, and every row was checked so that runs divided by balls reproduces the player's published strike rate before it was included.
The runs-in-fours column is fours multiplied by four, divided by career runs. Boundary share adds sixes multiplied by six to that numerator. Balls per four is balls faced divided by fours. All three are computed here and none is quoted from a published table.
The table is deliberately short. Verified four counts were available for seven India batters to the standard this page requires; several others are widely reported at figures between 700 and 900 but could not be reconciled against their own runs and balls, so they were left out rather than printed with a caveat. A shorter table that is right is more useful than a longer one that is approximately right.
Everything in the four sections above — the 2002-onward rate table, the phase and era splits, the batting-position gradient, the single-innings four counts and the home/away split — is computed from ball-by-ball data in the Cricsheet archive (cricsheet.org, ODC-BY 1.0), covering the 526 India men's ODIs it holds, played between 29 June 2002 and 19 July 2026. Cricsheet's coverage of India's ODIs is effectively complete from 2003 onward and very thin before it, so those figures describe the archived window and are labelled as such throughout. They are not career totals and should not be read as revisions to the career table at the top of the page.
The method was validated before any of it was used. Balls to a milestone, dismissals and batting positions reproduce independently checkable figures exactly: Virat Kohli's ODI duck count at the date of this site's earlier snapshot, and Rohit Sharma's 33 fours in his 264 at Kolkata, both come out of the archive unchanged.
One convention needs stating because it bounds what the archive can be asked. Cricsheet records runs off the bat, not whether the ball reached the rope, and its optional non-boundary flag is applied only sporadically — 18 times in 526 India matches. A count of four-run scoring shots therefore includes all-run fours and runs slightly above a true boundary count, by roughly six per cent on a long career. For that reason the archive is used here only for rates, ratios, splits and single-innings figures, where the small overcount affects every row alike and cancels, and never to restate a career four total. The career counts in the first table stand on the published records described above.
The claim in the closing section about batting positions is a description of where each of these seven batted for most of his career, not a data field, and Rohit Sharma in particular spent his early ODI career in the middle order before moving up in 2013. Figures were read in the final week of August 2026; Kohli and Rohit Sharma were still playing at that date.
