Five of the eight matches Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants have played have been decided by four runs or fewer, a Super Over, or both. No other fixture in the competition of comparable length has been anything like as tight. Lucknow lead 5-3, and three of their five wins came by two runs, one run and four runs.
The exceptions are the two blowouts, and both belong to a single season each. Lucknow bowled Kolkata out for 101 at Pune on 7 May 2022 and won by 75. Two years later at the Ekana Stadium, Kolkata made 235 for 6 and dismissed Lucknow for 137 to win by 98. Read down the column and the shape of the fixture is obvious. Four of the eight were settled by a single-figure run margin or a Super Over, and Lucknow won three of those four. Kolkata's two comfortable wins are both larger than anything Lucknow have managed, but they arrived in the same season, five weeks apart, and neither has been repeated.

Both sides have won more often at the opponent's ground than at their own. Kolkata have lost three of four at Eden Gardens in this fixture despite a strong home record generally, and Lucknow have lost both matches at the Ekana Stadium — one by 98 runs, the other in a Super Over. De Kock made 140 not out and Rahul 68 not out. No side had previously batted a full twenty overs in the IPL without losing a wicket, and the 210 passed the previous best opening partnership in the competition. Kolkata's 208 for 8 in reply was the highest total any side had made in a losing chase against Lucknow at the time — a two-run defeat off a full twenty overs, which is as close as a chase gets without a Super Over.

The April 2025 match at Eden Gardens produced 472 runs, the highest aggregate in the fixture, and finished with Lucknow four ahead. Six of the sixteen innings listed have passed 200 or come within a run of it, and four of those six came in matches decided by four runs or fewer.

Lucknow have batted first in six of the eight and won four of those. Their only successful chase came at Eden Gardens in April 2026, with three wickets in hand. Kolkata's pattern is the reverse — both of their non-Super-Over wins came without needing the full allocation once, and their sole win batting first was the 235 at Ekana.
Four points the tables imply rather than state:

Results, dates, grounds, totals and margins were read from this site's IPL season match lists for 2022 to 2026 and checked against the ESPNcricinfo scorecard for each of the eight matches. The innings of 18 May 2022 was verified separately, including the individual scores of 140 not out and 68 not out and the standing of the 210-run stand as the largest opening partnership in the competition.
Conventions. Eight meetings are counted and all eight produced a completed result. The tied match at the Ekana Stadium on 26 April 2026 is entered as a Kolkata win throughout, since the Super Over decided it; the tie itself is noted in the results table and the two 155 totals appear in the scoring table. The 2022 matches at Pune and Navi Mumbai are listed at their grounds rather than allocated as home fixtures, because that season's group stage was played entirely at neutral Maharashtra venues, and the venue table therefore shows neither side with a home advantage in those two.
Fixture-level individual aggregates — most runs or most wickets across these eight matches — are not given. The dataset behind the tables holds match results and innings totals, not per-player detail, and eight matches is too small a sample for such a figure to mean much in any case.
